How much space can I cool with an air conditioner?

April 10, 2025

The amount of space that an air conditioner can cool depends on its capacity, measured in frigories or BTUs. In general, 100 frigories are needed per square meter. Factors such as insulation, ceiling height and sun exposure also influence its performance. In this article we tell you how much space I can cool with an air conditioner.

How much space can I cool with an air conditioner?

With the arrival of warm weather, having an air conditioner becomes an excellent option to maintain a cool and comfortable environment at home. An air conditioner is a system that regulates the temperature of the air in an enclosed space through a cooling process. It works by extracting hot air from the interior, cooling it through a refrigerant circuit and returning it to the room at a lower temperature. In addition, some models also dehumidify the air, improving the thermal sensation and the quality of the environment.

To determine how much space an air conditioner can cool, it is essential to understand the relationship between the capacity of the equipment and the size of the area to be conditioned. Cooling capacity is measured in frigories per hour (fg/h) or in British thermal units per hour (BTU/h). One frigory is approximately equal to 4 BTU. Selecting an air conditioner with the right capacity ensures a comfortable environment and efficient energy consumption.

Calculating the necessary capacity according to the space

A general rule states that approximately 100 frigories per square meter are required to efficiently air-condition a space. For example, for a 20 m² room, around 2,000 frigories would be needed. This basic calculation can vary depending on additional factors such as ceiling height, number of windows, room orientation and thermal insulation.

Factors that influence cooling capacity

  1. Ceiling height: Spaces with higher than usual ceilings require greater cooling capacity due to the greater volume of air.
  2. Insulation and construction materials: Good insulation reduces the thermal load, while materials that retain heat can increase it.
  3. Orientation and Sun Exposure: Rooms facing south or with large windows exposed to direct sun increase the need for greater cooling capacity.
  4. Number of Occupants and Electronics: Each person and electronic device emits heat, which can increase the thermal load of the space.

Converting Frigories to BTUs

For those who prefer to work with BTUs, it's helpful to know that 1 frigory is roughly equivalent to 4 BTUs. Therefore, a 2,000 frigory air conditioner would have a capacity of about 8,000 BTUs.

Helpful Calculation Tools

There are online calculators that make it easy to determine the appropriate air conditioning capacity based on the specific dimensions and characteristics of the room. These tools consider factors such as space size, sun exposure, and number of occupants to provide an accurate recommendation.

Determining the proper capacity of an air conditioner is essential to ensure a comfortable and energy-efficient environment. Considering factors such as space size, ceiling height, insulation, and sun exposure will help you select the most suitable unit for your needs.
