Sometimes, when a switch stops working or wears out with use, we think that its repair is complicated and we let it go. But the truth is that changing a switch is a simple and quick task. In this post we show you how to do it easily and safely. Take note of the steps!
Materials and tools needed
- New switch
- Flathead screwdriver
- Phillips screwdriver
Steps to follow
1. Disconnect the electricity
Before starting any work with the electrical installation, it is essential to cut off the power supply. To do this, lower the main circuit breaker (commonly known as “lowering the fuses”). Once this is done, make sure that there is no current reaching the switch you are going to change.
2. Remove the trim
The first step in changing a switch is to remove the trim or outer frame. To do this, use a flathead screwdriver and gently pry the edges until it comes off. Be careful not to damage the paint on the wall while doing this step.
3. Loosen the screws and remove the old switch
Next, loosen the screws holding the switch plate to the wall. Once loose, carefully remove the switch. If necessary, disconnect the wires from the back of the old switch. Check that the wires are in good condition; if necessary, trim the ends a bit to clean them up.
4. Connect the new switch
With the old switch removed, take the new switch and connect the wires to the corresponding terminals. Make sure to route the wires correctly to avoid malfunctions. Place the new switch on the wall and tighten the screws to secure it firmly.
5. Attach the trim
Once the switch is securely attached, place the trim or decorative frame over the switch. Press gently until it snaps into place.
6. Restore power
With the new switch installed, turn the circuit breaker or “leads” back on to restore power. Then, check that the switch is working properly by turning the light on and off.
As you can see, changing a switch is a simple task that doesn't require too much technical knowledge or complicated tools. The next time a switch stops working or you want to renew it to give your home a more modern touch, you already know what to do. Let's get to work!
