How to remove rust: simple products and techniques

Nov. 22, 2024

Rust on metal objects is one of the most common concerns for many people, especially when it comes to items that have significant sentimental or functional value. From balcony railings to tools or decorative pieces, rust can appear due to prolonged exposure to moisture, rain, or other adverse weather conditions. But don't worry, in this post we will tell you how to remove rust easily with three effective methods.

How to remove rust: simple products and techniques

Three foolproof methods for removing rust

There are several ways to remove rust, and the choice of method will depend on the condition of the object and the materials available. Below, we explain three methods: home remedies, chemicals, and power tools.

Method 1: Home remedy with baking soda

One of the most common home methods for removing rust is using baking soda along with an abrasive sponge. This is an effective approach, easy to apply, and does not require harsh chemicals.

1. Prepare the baking soda paste: Heat some water and mix it with baking soda until it forms a paste. The amount will depend on the size of the surface you are treating.

2. Apply the paste: Place a small amount of the mixture on the abrasive sponge and gently scrub the rusty area. Avoid scrubbing too hard to avoid damaging the metal surface.

3. Let it sit and rinse: After scrubbing, let the paste sit for five minutes and then rinse with water. The result will be cleaner, rust-free metal.

If you prefer, you can also use a wire brush instead of the abrasive sponge for a deeper finish, especially if the rust is severe.

Method 2: Using chemicals

Sometimes, home remedies are not enough, and in these cases it is advisable to resort to specific chemical products to remove rust. These products are designed to break down rust quickly and are commonly used by professionals.

1. Personal protection: Before handling chemicals, be sure to wear gloves, safety glasses and a mask to protect yourself from fumes and possible splashes.

2. Product Application: Apply rust remover to the rusted surface and use a wire brush to scrub the affected area. It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding application and drying time.

3. Degrease the Surface: After removing the rust, clean the surface with sulfuric acid or trichloroethylene to degrease and remove any residue. Once dry, the metal will be rust-free.

Remember that some chemicals are very abrasive, so you must be careful not to damage the base material.

Method 3: Power Tools

For large surfaces or cases of advanced rust, a power tool such as a grinder or multi-tool may be the best option. These tools require specific abrasive discs to remove rust without damaging the underlying material.

1. Choose the right accessory: Use anti-rust flap discs adapted to the type of metal and the level of rust.

2. Power Tool Polishing: Apply the power tool with gentle, steady strokes to the rusted surface until the rust is completely removed. This method is fast and effective for larger areas or intensive jobs.

Take care of the metal after removing rust

Regardless of the method you use, it is essential to protect the metal once the rust has been removed. Applying an anti-oxidant will help prevent the appearance of rust in the future, thus avoiding the need to repeat the cleaning process frequently.

With these simple steps, you can effectively remove rust and keep your metal objects looking good for longer.
