How to save on heating: 6 tricks that work

Oct. 25, 2024

With the arrival of winter, keeping your home warm becomes a priority, but also a challenge for your wallet. Constant use of heating can significantly increase your energy bill, so it is essential to find ways to optimize its use. Below, we share six simple but effective tricks to save on heating without giving up comfort.

How to save on heating: 6 tricks that work

1. Control the temperature with a thermostat

One of the most efficient ways to save on heating is by controlling the temperature in your home with a thermostat. Ideally, use a programmable model that allows you to set when the heating should turn on and off automatically. This way, you can set a limit temperature (for example, 20 degrees) so that the boiler only activates when necessary.

Programming the thermostat is also useful to avoid forgetfulness, such as leaving the heating on at night. Set it to turn off at a certain time, which will help you reduce consumption without the house losing too much temperature.

2. Ventilate with caution

Ventilating the house daily is important to keep the air clean and healthy, but doing it improperly can waste a lot of heat. It is best to ventilate in the morning, before midday, and not during the warmest hours of the day. Open the windows for 10 to 15 minutes to air out the rooms without losing too much of the stored heat.

Remember to synchronise ventilation with the thermostat, turning off the heating while you ventilate to avoid unnecessary consumption.

3. Bleed the radiators

A simple task that many people overlook is to bleed the radiators at the start of the cold season. Over time, air can build up in the radiators, preventing them from heating efficiently. Bleeding them ensures that heat is distributed correctly and allows the radiators to operate at full capacity, which in turn reduces energy consumption.

4. Insulate doors and windows

Proper insulation of doors and windows is crucial to prevent heat loss. Air currents entering through cracks or poorly sealed spaces create a constant escape of heat, causing the heating to work harder than necessary. Placing draught excluders on door and window frames, as well as the bottom of the front door, is an easy and effective way to keep the heat in.

You can also resort to simple solutions such as placing rugs or mats on the floor to better insulate rooms and prevent heat loss through the floor.

5. Avoid blocking radiators

For radiators to work optimally, it is important not to block their heat flow. Sometimes, without realizing it, we place furniture, clothing or shelves in front of radiators, which prevents heat from being distributed throughout the room. Keep the space around radiators clear to allow heat to circulate freely and your home to warm up faster.

6. Control your hot water usage

For those who use gas heaters or radiators, hot water usage can cause a spike in energy consumption. Reducing the time you spend in the shower and opting for showers instead of baths will help reduce your bill. Also, make sure you continue to use the thermostat to regulate both heating and hot water, keeping everything under control.

By following these simple tips, you can keep your home warm during the winter months without your energy bill skyrocketing. Saving on heating is not only possible, but it is a way to optimize resources and enjoy a comfortable home without financial worries.
