New energy labelling: from "A" to "G"

Feb. 28, 2023

In March 2021 the new energy efficiency labeling of the European Union came into force, we will tell you the differences and characteristics of this new labeling for your home appliances.

New energy labelling: from "A" to "G"
What is the energy efficiency label?

The energy label is a seal that indicates the efficiency of any device for sale that consumes energy. It is based on a classification scale by letters and colors that goes from A and the color green, for the most efficient equipment, to D and the color red, for the least efficient. In the next point we will tell you the differences of this type of energy labelling.

Features of the new label

With this change in energy labeling in the European Union, the aim is to make the information clearer and more understandable for the consumer and they can clearly see which is the most sustainable and economical option.

Changes from the old to the new label:

  1. Classes: seven at most, new energy scale from A to G, without further classes +: A+++, A++ and A+ disappear, being the letters from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). With the new system, we will be able to find a refrigerator that is currently classified as A+++, move to category C. This change does not mean that it has gotten worse, but rather that the new labeling is stricter and at first category A will be empty, while very few products will get a B or C score. This will be the case, to leave room for improvement for the coming years.
  2. They include a QR code that allows consumers to learn more about the device simply by scanning it with their smartphone.
  3. Annual energy consumption shows the weighted energy consumption in kWh/100 operating cycles (in the “Eco 40-60” program).
  4. Depending on the appliance, the new energy labels not only report electricity consumption, but also provide data on the water used per wash cycle, storage capacity or noise, among others.
  5. More demanding limits: the appliances will be in a lower energy class than the current one, as the limits are stricter.

Which products must carry the energy label

This certification is mandatory throughout Europe for the following types of household appliances:

  • Electric oven and microwave.
  • Fridges and freezers.
  • Washing machines, dryers and dishwashers.
  • Domestic light sources
