Propane, the alternative if you do not have access to natural gas in your renovation

Jan. 12, 2024

Propane is a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), which is obtained from oil and natural gas deposits, and which is transformed into liquid, for distribution and domestic or industrial use.

It is the most recommended energy in cold climate areas that do not have access to the natural gas distribution network, since it is much more efficient and economical than electricity.

Next, we tell you everything you need to know to implement this heat source in the comprehensive renovation of your home.

Propane, the alternative if you do not have access to natural gas in your renovation

Main characteristics of propane gas

Propane gas can power heating and cooking systems, and heat domestic water. And, as we have mentioned, it is very common in areas where access to natural gas has not yet reached.

It achieves all this thanks to its high-performance oil properties, which are capable of generating a lot of heat energy without using so much raw material. To give us an idea, it has a power of 22,000kcal/m3.

In addition, it gasifies better in cold climate areas and withstands freezing temperatures of up to -44°C.

Types of propane gas supplies

Propane gas can be transported and stored very easily, therefore, it can be distributed in three different ways:

  • Bulk propane is distributed in single tanks, which are refilled through tanker trucks and are usually installed in industries or homes with high consumption. Its cost depends on the distributor in the area, although it is usually around €1,500 and €2,500 per ton.
  • The bottled propane is distributed in propane cylinders, whose measurements can be 11 and 35kg, and are usually common in single-family homes with average consumption. The cost of the regulated 11kg cylinder is €13.32 today, while the 35kg cylinder has a different price depending on the supplier. The Cepsa cylinder is currently the cheapest, priced at €72.90, and is followed by the Repsol cylinder for €75.50.
  • The piped propane is distributed through the pipeline network that connects the homes with a central tank. Its cost is regulated by the Government and varies each month, currently the fixed part is €1.59 per month and consumption is €0.8764/kg

How can I install propane gas in my comprehensive renovation

The steps to follow to carry out the installation of propane gas in the comprehensive renovation of a home are as follows:

  1. In the first instance, the energy needs of the property must be analyzed, in addition to the destination of the supply, whether the heat energy will be used in the kitchen, heating and/or to generate hot water
  2. Next, you mustchoose the type of propane installation. On the one hand, in a single-family home with low or medium consumption, it is recommended to opt for bottled propane; on the other hand, in another home with high consumption, installing bulk propane will be profitable. Finally, if in a community of neighbors 1/3 of the owners decide to have this energy, the installation of propane gas will be carried out.
  3. With the two previous points clear, it will be time to contact an authorized propane gas installer. This must be accredited by the Ministry of Energy and by the competent body of the Autonomous Community.
  4. Finally, before starting work, make sure that your project budget includes the following concepts:
  • Performing the connection to connect the tank, if necessary
  • Construction of the propane tank cover
  • Projection of the pipes through which the gas will circulate
  • Purchase and installation of the necessary equipment: gas boiler, water heater…
  • Connection with supply channeling devices
  • Sizing of radiation, installation of pipes and elements necessary for the operation of the heating system
  • Gas Installation Certificate (CIG) to be able to contract and have the supply
