Types of locks and how to choose the most suitable one for each case

Jan. 21, 2025

Locks are key elements to ensure the security of our homes, offices or any other space. However, we do not always know the different types of locks available and how to choose the most suitable one for our needs. In this article we will tell you what the main types of locks are and help you choose the one that best suits each situation.

Types of locks and how to choose the most suitable one for each case

Types of locks

Below we present the main types of locks, both for home doors and for other spaces, such as safes or offices.

1. Tubular locks

This type of lock is ideal for spaces where access is to be restricted, such as offices, storage rooms or private rooms. It is characterized by allowing locking from the inside by simply pressing a button, making it a very practical and safe option. It is common to see them in bathrooms in public establishments, since their opening system is simple and effective.

2. Surface-mounted locks

Surface-mounted locks are installed on the inside of the door, which makes them visible from the inside. They are usually used on exterior doors that face the street, but generally need to be complemented with another type of lock, since on their own they can be vulnerable to attempts at forced entry using levers.

3. Mortise or recessed locks

These are the most commonly used on the main doors of homes. As they are recessed into the door, their mechanism is hidden, making them safer and more aesthetically pleasing. Although they are secure in themselves, they are often complemented with anti-bumping or locking systems to reinforce their protection. They work on both wooden and metal doors and are a popular choice due to their high reliability.

4. Cylindrical or European profile locks

Cylindrical locks, also very common in the entrance doors of homes, offer a secure system based on a cylinder that is activated by inserting the key, lifting small tabs that release the lock mechanism. Many of these locks already include anti-bumping technology, which makes them very resistant to intrusion attempts. In addition, their quality-price ratio makes them a very attractive option.

5. Multipoint locks

Considered the safest to date, multipoint locks are ideal for armoured or high-security doors. Their design includes several anchoring points along the door, making it extremely difficult to force them open with levers or other methods. They are perfect for the main door of a home, as they offer a high level of security.

6. Digital locks

Digital locks are an increasingly popular option, especially in places like garages, hotels and public establishments. These locks work with advanced security systems, such as cards, codes or even fingerprints. Although their use on residential doors is not so common, it is likely that we will see them more in this area in the future. Their digital locking system offers an additional level of security.

How to choose the right lock?

The choice of lock depends on several factors, such as the level of security you need, the type of door and the place where it will be installed. For example, if you are looking for security for the main door of your home, a multipoint or cylindrical lock with anti-bumping technology is an excellent option. If you need a lock for an office or storage room, a tubular lock may be the most practical solution.

In short, the market offers a wide variety of locks for different uses and needs. Evaluate the characteristics of each one carefully and choose the one that best fits your security requirements. Now you know how to choose the best lock for each situation!
