Types of screwdrivers and their uses

Jan. 28, 2025

The screwdriver is one of the most common and versatile hand tools, found in both homes and DIY workshops. Although it may seem like a simple tool, there are several types of screwdrivers, each designed for a specific use. In this article we explain the most important types and their main applications.

Types of screwdrivers and their uses

Parts of a screwdriver

Before we get into the types of screwdrivers, it is important to know the parts that make it up:

- Body: This is the steel bar that forms the main structure. Depending on the type of screwdriver, its length and thickness can vary. The lower part of the body is the blade, which tapers to the tip, the most important part, as it comes into contact with the screw.

- Core: This connects the body to the handle and must be strong to ensure a long life for the tool.

- Handle: This is the part where we apply the force to turn the screwdriver. Handles are usually non-slip and can be made of various materials to provide comfort and safety during use.

Types of Screwdrivers

Now that you know the parts of a screwdriver, let's look at the most common types and their uses:

1. Flathead or Blade Screwdriver

This is one of the first types of screwdrivers to be invented. It has a flat tip and is used for straight-slot screws. Although it is used less and less because flathead screws are less secure and prone to slipping, it is still a staple tool in many workshops.

2. Phillips Screwdriver

Probably the most widely used type, especially in industrial production. It was invented in the 1930s by Henry Phillips and is characterized by its cross-shaped tip. Although it is more efficient than the flathead screwdriver, Phillips screws can become deformed if too much force is applied.

3. Pozidriv Screwdriver

This screwdriver is an upgrade to the Phillips, designed to reduce slipping. It is primarily used in electronics work and is distinguished by having four additional contact points that provide greater stability. Some Pozidriv models have a special coating that increases grip and safety.

4. Torx Screwdriver

This type of screwdriver is known for its slip resistance thanks to its six-pointed star-shaped tip. It is widely used in the automotive industry and in situations that require applying high torque. It is important to ensure that Torx screws are clean to avoid accidents or damage.

5. Allen or Hex Screwdriver

Although it is more common to hear about the Allen key, there is also the Allen screwdriver, designed for hex-head screws. This type of screwdriver is widely used in furniture installation and in tasks that require a precise and firm fit.

Other types of screwdrivers

- Precision screwdriver: Ideal for small and delicate jobs, such as watchmaking. Its small size and ergonomic handle allow for precise handling.

- Ratchet screwdriver: It is characterized by its versatility, as it includes several interchangeable tips, making it very practical for different types of screws.

- Security screwdriver: Specially designed for electrical work, this type of screwdriver offers a non-slip handle and insulating materials to ensure user safety.

Conclusion

Knowing the different types of screwdrivers and their uses will allow you to choose the right tool for each DIY task. From the traditional flat-head screwdriver to more specialized ones such as the Torx or Pozidriv, each one has a specific function that will help you work efficiently and safely. We hope this guide has been helpful in becoming a screwdriver expert!
