Shared optimism for a fresh start in postwar Europe brought together three engineering friends from Lyon, France, in 1949. Many European households may still have financial problems, but that did not prevent the desire for new adventures. Engineers from Lyon, Gabriel Corlet, André Colomb and René Sillon, along with their families, went camping for the first time.

During this family camping trip, the three engineers realized the lack of basic meal prep options when on a road trip or camping trip. Since the beginning of the mandatory work holidays for employees in France, Corlet, Colomb, and Sillon set out to create a simple yet revolutionary innovation, the first portable energy solution! A small, blue, portable, refillable gas bottle called the "bidon bleu".

With this little blue bottle, the CAMPINGAZ® brand was born. The company quickly expanded to not only supply bottled gas, but beginning in 1952 it also developed portable gas stoves and other devices to enjoy the outdoors in a convenient, simple and affordable way.

The invention of a portable kitchen solution for outdoor cooking was a success outside of France as well, and the "blue bottles" quickly became a hit throughout Europe: offering holidaymakers the peace of mind of that their camping and cooking gear would be up and ready for use wherever they traveled.

In 1994, Campingaz® presented, as one of the pioneer companies in Europe, its first gas barbecue and families could enjoy cooking delicious meals also outside, in the garden.
